Malachite is a Copper Carbonate mineral that often forms botryoidal,
fibrous or stalagmitic masses. It is often the result of the weathering
of Copper Ores and is commonly found with Azurite, Goethite and Calcite.
It is typically associated with Copper deposits including Limestone which
is the source of the Carbonate. Malachite is found in many regions world
wide and is usually shaded green in color.

Dalmatian Stone, or orbicular Rhyolite, is an igneous rock that was
formed by lava flows on the Earth's surface. The spots or "orbs" probably
occurred when molten lava reacted with fragments of rock known as
Xenoliths. These stones are light to dark tan in color with black spots
throughout. The nickname "Dalmatian" was given to this unusual looking
mineral because of its resemblance to a Dalmatian dog's spots.

Lapis is a rock and not a mineral because it is made up from
various other minerals. To be a mineral it would have one constituent
only, and Lapis has several including Lazurite, Sodium, Aluminum, Silicon,
Oxygen, Sulfur and Chlorine. Most Lapis contains Calcite, Sodalite and
Pyrite. The best color is an intense blue that is lightly dusted with
small flecks of Pyrite. Lapis takes an excellent polish and has been made
into jewelry, carvings, boxes, mosaics and ornamental objects.

Quartz is the second most common mineral in the Earth's continental
crust. It is mainly composed of Silica or Silica based minerals.
Although Quartz is known by a variety of names, the most important
distinction between types of Quartz is that of macro-crystalline,
individual crystals visible to the unaided eye, and micro-crystalline,
where aggregates of crystals are only visible under high magnification.
There are many forms of Quartz including Chalcedony, Amethyst, Citrine,
and Carnelian which are results of mineral impurities or heat treatments.

Marble is a metamorphic rock consisting of Limestone but mostly
composed of Calcite. It is used extensively for sculpture, building
material and has many decorative uses. The pure white Marble is probably
the most common form known, but the characteristic swirls and veins of
many colored Marble varieties are usually due to various mineral
impurities such as Clay, Silt, Sand, Iron Oxides or Chert. |

Rose Quartz is a member of the Quartz family that exhibits a pale
Pink to Rose Red hue. The color is usually due to the trace amounts of
Titanium, Iron or Manganese in the mass material. Some Rose Quartz
contains microscopic Rutile needles which produce an asterism in
transmitted light. An all time favorite at the Rock Shop. |

Agates mostly occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or waters
containing Silica in solution which is possibly derived from the
decomposition of Silicates in the lava. The Siliceous matter is deposited
in regular layers resulting in the banded or striped formation. It is very
unlikely that you would ever find an exact duplicate of any type of Agate,
Brazilian or other. |

Calcite is a Carbonate mineral that is most widely distributed on the
Earth's surface. It is a common constituent of sedimentary rocks with
Limestone in particular. A Calcite formation can take on many different
shapes and sizes which is dependent on the location, ground water
occurrence and temperature. Calcite is usually white or colorless but can
be gray, red, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown or black. The deeper the
color is usually indicative of the definitive impurities from the earth or
water.

Pyrite, or Iron Pyrite, is an Iron sulfide with isometric Crystals
that usually appear as cubes. It is brittle and can break or powder
easily. Its metallic luster and brass yellow hue have earned it the
nickname of "fool's gold" due to many miners mistaken it for the real
thing. Ironically, small quantities of actual gold are sometimes found in
Pyrite. It is the most common of the sulfide minerals and is usually
found with other sulfides or oxides in Quartz veins, sedimentary or
metamorphic rocks.

Prehnite is a Phyllosilicate mixture of Calcium and Aluminum.
Although it is not a Zeolite, it is often associated with them and with
Datolite and Calcite, in veins and cavities of Basaltic rocks, sometimes
in Granites, Syenites or Gneisses. The color varies from light green to
grey to white to yellow or a mix of colors. It is translucent and was
named after it's discoverer, Colonel Hendrik von Prehn.

Jasper, or spotted stone, is an opaque, impure variety of Quartz that
is usually red, yellow or brown in color. Some Jaspers simultaneously
exhibit several variants such as banding, flow patterns, dendrites or
color variations. This results in what appears to be scenes or images in
a cut section of the Jasper.
