Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of the minerals quartz and moganite. Chalcedony has a waxy luster, and may be semitransparent or translucent. It can assume a wide range of colors, but those most commonly seen are white to gray, grayish-blue or a shade of brown ranging from pale to nearly black.

Okenite is a silicate mineral that is usually associated with zeolites. It most commonly is found as small white "cotton ball" formations within basalt geodes. These formations are clusters of straight, radiating, fibrous crystals that are both bendable and fragile. Because of this common shape, Okenite is often called a "warm and fuzzy" stone because it brings feelings of the "warm fuzzies", feelings of comfort and belonging. It was first discribed in 1828 for an occurrence at Disko Island, Greenland and named for German naturalist Lorenz Oken.

$100.00 M101b Here is an outstanding and interesting specimen of Silicon Carbide. This unique mineral has well defined smaller and unusual larger Crystals of different sizes with a sparkly Green, Blue and Purple sheen in the light that changes from different directions.  It measures 5 1/8" x 5 1/4" x  4 1/4" and has an all natural texture and finish. It is very difficult to capture the full brilliance of the diverse colors but it is very colorful and sparkly. Some of the crystals are slightly damaged but still amazing to behold. This is a one-of-a-kind mineral for the one-of-a-kind mineral collector and something very different!

Silicon carbide, also known as carborundum, is a compound of silicon and carbon and occurs naturally as ultra rare moissanite. Silicon carbide powder has been mass-produced since 1893 for use as an abrasive. Grains of silicon carbide can be bonded together by sintering to form very hard ceramics widely used in applications requiring high endurance, like as car brakes or ceramic plates in bulletproof vests. Electronic applications of silicon carbide as light emitting diodes and detectors began over 100 years ago and continue today are widely used in high-temperature/high-voltage semiconductor electronics. Large single crystals of silicon carbide can be grown by the Lely method; they can be cut into gems known as "synthetic moissanite".

Aragonite is a Carbonate mineral that can occur in conjunction with Calcium Carbonates.  Aragonite differs from Calcite in the formation of the Crystal shapes which can be in lattice, crystal, columnar or fibrous in many different designs, shapes and sizes.  Aragonite will form in mollusk shells, oceans and salt water caves as inorganic precipitates called marine cements and speleotherms.  Ammolite is a form of Aragonite with impurities that make it iridescent and valuable as a gemstone.

Geodes are geological rock formations which occur in sedimentary and certain volcanic rocks.  They are essentially rock cavities or vugs with internal Crystal formations or concentric banding.  The exterior is generally Limestone while the interior contains Quartz Crystals and/or Chalcedony deposits.  If the Geode is completely filled with Crystal, being solid all the way through, it is then called a nodule.

Labradorite is a Feldspar mineral that occurs in large Crystal masses in anorthosite and shows an iridescence or "play of colors."  Gemstone varieties of Labradorite exhibiting a high degree of iridescence are Spectrolite, Moonstone and Sunstone.  High quality samples with good iridescent qualities are desired for jewelry.

Quartz is the second most common mineral in the Earth's continental crust.  It is mainly composed of Silica or Silica based minerals.  Although Quartz is known by a variety of names, the most important distinction between types of Quartz is that of macro-crystalline, individual crystals visible to the unaided eye, and micro-crystalline, where aggregates of crystals are only visible under high magnification.  There are many forms of Quartz including Chalcedony, Amethyst, Citrine, and Carnelian which are results of mineral impurities or heat treatments.

Calcite is a Carbonate mineral that is most widely distributed on the Earth's surface.  It is a common constituent of sedimentary rocks with Limestone in particular.  A Calcite formation can take on many different shapes and sizes which is dependent on the location, ground water occurrence and temperature.  Calcite is usually white or colorless but can be gray, red, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown or black.  The deeper the color is usually indicative of the definitive impurities from the earth or water.

Limonite is an ore consisting of a mixture of hydrated Iron Oxide-Hydroxide of varying composition of minerals such as Goethite, Lepidocrocite, or Jarosite. It has been mined with Hematite as an Ore for the production of Iron. Limonite is heavy and has a yellow-brown color. It is often used as the pigment ochre in many paints.

Gossan is intensely oxidized, weathered or decomposed rock, usually the upper and exposed part of an ore deposit or mineral vein. In the classic gossan or iron cap all that remains is iron oxides and quartz, often in the form of boxworks.

Rosasite is an uncommon mineral belonging to the Carbonate group of minerals. It has a minor potential for use as zinc or copper ore as is typically associated with Copper deposits including Limestone which is the source of the Carbonate.
