Sardonyx is a form of Chalcedony. Chalcedony is a
cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of
the minerals quartz and moganite. Chalcedony has a waxy luster, and may be
semitransparent or translucent. It can assume a wide range of colors, but
those most commonly seen are white to gray, grayish-blue or a shade of
brown ranging from pale to nearly black. |

Sodalite is a rich royal blue mineral enjoyed as an
ornamental stone. Although massive samples are opaque, Crystals are
usually transparent to translucent. It is very similar to Lapis but
without the Pyrite Crystals and distinguishable color differences. It

Serpentine is a group of common rock forming hydrous Magnesium Iron
Silicate minerals. It can contain minor amounts of Chromium, Manganese,
Cobalt or Nickel. Serpentine may refer to over 20 different varieties
that belong to the Serpentine group and the most common are Antigorite,
Chrysotile and Lizardite. The color is often green and may have a mottled
or scaly appearance.

SP104c Here is something different for the
sphere collector! This is a very nice, totally Black Shungite sphere with a
good polish. This sphere measures approximately 1" in diameter and has a character all it's own.
This is a similar to like item
as they are all very close to appearance and size.
The term "shungite" was originally used in 1879 to describe a
mineraloid with more than 98 percent carbon. More recently the term has
also been used to describe shungite-bearing rocks, leading to some
confusion. Shungite has to date mainly been found in Russia. Shungite has
been used in medical treatment since the early 18th-century. "Peter the
Great" set up Russia's first spa to utilize the water purifying properties
of shungite and instigated its use in providing purified water for the
Russian army. The anti-bacterial properties of shungite have been
confirmed by modern testing.

This material is a relatively new find from Madagascar. The deposit formed
as a rhyolite flow but has been completely silicified. The Rhyolitic eyes
or orbs come in an astonishing array of colors and color combinations. The
back ground can be white, pink, green, red, or yellow. Botryoidal formations
as well as white and deep green druzy are also common. This deposit has
been discovered at the edge of the ocean. It can only be seen and collected
at low tide. The area has no road so the material must be transported to
civilization by boat. This material is fast becoming a rarity in the
Jasper ocean fields, so get one while it is still available.

Scolecite is a hydrated calcium silicate mineral belonging
to the Zeolite group. It commonly occurs as sprays of thin, prismatic
needles, frequently flattened on one side. Scolecite is usually colorless
or white, but can also be pink, salmon, red or green. It is transparent to
translucent, with a white streak and a luster which is vitreous, or silky
for fibrous specimens. Scolecite is a common Zeolite often found with
associated minerals including quartz, apophyllite and stilbite.

SP107c This is a new addition to the Rock Shed's sphere
department. This is an interesting, very cool Petrified Wood sphere from
Madagascar. It measures 4 3/4" in diameter, weighs over 5

Petrified Wood is a type of a fossil as it consists of fossil wood where
all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining
the original structure of the wood. These minerals are most often Silicates
such as Quartz. Other minerals, Manganese, Iron and Copper, in the water
or mud during the petrification process gives Petrified Wood a variety of
color ranges: black - Carbon; green/blue - Copper; red/brown/yellow - Iron.
Petrified Wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its
detail all the way down to the microscopic level. Structures such as
tree rings and the various tissues are often observed features. Although
Petrified Wood can be found worldwide, it is rather rare in larger quantities
and at times can be difficult to obtain by the average collector.

Obsidian is a type of naturally-occurring glass formed as an extrusive
igneous rock. It is produced when felsic lava erupted from a volcano,
cools rapidly through the glass transition temperature and freezes without
sufficient time for Crystal growth. Because of the lack of Crystal structure,
Obsidian blade edges can reach almost molecular thinness, leading to its ancient
use of projectile points (arrow heads), and its modern use as surgical scalpel
blades.

Quartz is the second most common mineral in the Earth's continental
crust. It is mainly composed of Silica or Silica based minerals.
Although Quartz is known by a variety of names, the most important
distinction between types of Quartz is that of macro-crystalline,
individual crystals visible to the unaided eye, and micro-crystalline,
where aggregates of crystals are only visible under high magnification.
There are many forms of Quartz including Chalcedony, Amethyst, Citrine,
and Carnelian which are results of mineral impurities or heat treatments.
Tourmaline is one of the most chemically complicated of all
Silicate minerals. It is a complex Silicate of Aluminum and Boron and the
composition varies widely with Sodium, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Lithium
and many other elements that enter into it's structure. It can occur in a
long, slender needle-like crystal to a thick prismatic and columnar
crystal to a radial like daisy formation. It comes in many colors usually
black and brown (iron rich); brown and yellow (magnesium rich); and blue,
red, green, yellow, and pink (lithium rich). This mineral is found in
igneous rocks, like Granite Pegmatite, and metamorphic rocks such as
Schist and Marble.

Pyrite, or Iron Pyrite, is an Iron sulfide with isometric Crystals that
usually appear as cubes. It is brittle and can break or powder easily.
Its metallic luster and brass yellow hue have earned it the nickname of
"fool's gold" due to many miners mistaken it for the real thing.
Ironically, small quantities of actual gold are sometimes found in
Pyrite. It is the most common of the sulfide minerals and is usually
found with other sulfides or oxides in Quartz veins, sedimentary or
metamorphic rocks.

sub-central orthochoanitic siphuncle. The surface is ornamented by a

Opal is a colorful mineral of hydrated form of Silica
related to Quartz. It's internal structure makes it diffract light, taking
on many colors depending on the conditions when it was formed. Those
colors can range from clear through white, red, orange, yellow, green,
blue, purple, rose, pink, brown and black. Opal varies in optical density
from opaque to semi-transparent. Opal is the national gemstone of
Australia, a producer of over 93% of the world's supply.
Dendrites are branched or tree like inclusions, usually
manganese or iron oxides that are caused by irreversible aggregation of
small particles forming large cluster. Dendritic crystal growth is common
and resembles a snowflake formation or frost patterns on a window.
Dendritic crystallization forms a natural fractal pattern. The term
"dendrite" comes from the Greek word dendron, which means "tree". It has
only been in recent years that researchers have begun to understand how
dendrites form and these ideas were developed by chemists and
mathematicians working in disciplines called chaos and fractal geometry.
Colloidal-sized particles move in random paths in a phenomenon called
Brownian motion.
